While reading "On the Rainy River", I was able to relate the story to to the Post-colonial literary theory, as many aspects of the story appear that allow me to look into the story with a deeper meaning. Post-colonial theory is mostly about the political, aesthetic, economical, historical and social impact, it takes on the claim that our world is difficult to understand with the exception of history and colonial rules.
Tim O'Brien seemed like he was born and raised in a small town. His values and his morals seemed to support the rest of the community. He was raised with strong values of doing the right thing. When he was drafted to go to Vietnam, it was very disconcerting for him, as he didn't believe in the actual war itself. "I was above it",(2) Tim internalizes to himself when he received his draft notice. Post-colonial theory is also shown when Tim is at an estranged lodge trying to find his way. He knew, from the time during his escape to Canada, what he had to do "I was ashamed of my conscience, ashamed to be doing the right thing"(9). He had deep regret, the question he was asking himself whether he should do the right thing for his country, his state, his community, his family. When Tim received his draft paper, he was very concerned with the social impact. It was something impossible for him to understand that the world of war was something that came with significant political, and social impact. The post-colonial theory brings out the small town person into a bigger political, historical and social impact on his life. I'm glad that I was able to reflect on the story with the post-colonial theory, as it allowed me to find deeper meaning toward war, and the impact on the soldiers.

When it comes to essay writing it can be difficult figuring out what works best for you, and finding good tips to help improve your essay writing skills. In my years of writing essays, there is a lot that I find more difficult than others. One important detail that I find hard is supporting my point to state while making the sentences, and paragraphs flow from the previous.
While I do struggle with this, I have also found a few tips that have really helped when it comes to writing essays, and supporting my points. One particular point I have learned when it comes to essay writing is pre-writing, so I am able to get all my ideas down, with all my points and examples I want to include in my writing. I am then able to refer back to these ideas, not worrying about flipping through pages, or articles trying to find examples to support my writing. When I don't use pre-writing, I to tend to notice I do not do as well on my essay, as it comes out unclear and my writing seems messy. Using feedback to improve my writing is the step I would use when sharing and discussing with my peers. In my own writing I may have a direct idea that makes sense in my head but in others eyes, they may have a different point and not fully understand what you are trying to say. I can also ask questions if anything seemed unclear, or if I have overlooked ideas and if there are any other points that I missed. From the movie Sound of Music, their is a classic song that everyone has heard, My Favorite Things. Pop artist Ariana grande came out with a song in January of 2019, that goes of to some of the beat, and lyrics from the classic, My Favorite Things . As soon as Ariana Grande released the song 7 rings, people were quick to notice how similar it was to My Favorite Things.
Ariana Grande copied the original, (My Favorite Things) By adding a similar beat to the background during the chorus, and adding lyrics from the original and making them her own. In the original song, the lyrics state 'favourite' things and items, from the characters personality and goes on by saying "these are a few of my favorite things". In the new version, the artist Ariana Grande states different things according to her and with the same tone and beat, she then says "write myself all of my favorite things." Although the main idea of 7 rings was to recreate a twist to My Favorite Things, The artist managed to copy a lot of the main points, while still managing to add a different beat that is more like todays pop culture, so it would become a hit. Considering Ariana Grande managed to change all of the lyrics and add different beats to the back, I do feel that 7 rings doesn't infringe on the original works copy write, as she has made it her own piece. This mourning I took the time to sit down and listen to to a podcast about a trial that was taken place in Connecticut. This wasn't the first time I have ever listened to a podcast, but I have never listened to a podcast that took me through a trial like this one.
I really enjoyed this type of podcast, as I am interested in trial cases and learning about how trials work, and what truly goes down behind the scenes. the narrator Sarah Koenig is an investigative journalist, and as I was going through the trial seeing the type of work that she puts out through a podcast, it was very interesting to see as it is a good way to put her work out into the world. I really enjoyed the fact that Sarah Koenig shares her work through a podcast rather than articles, or even books. As a student I personally enjoy listening to story's rather than reading, as it allows me to do other things when listening, as I do have a short attention span I could even go make a snack while still being engaged into the story if I wanted too. In conclusion to this podcast I will definitely be going back to the serial website and looking at more of this type of podcast to listen to, as it was a good experience for me. if you would like to listen to the free podcast I talked about feel free to click the link below. Grade 12 academic english is mandatory for all university students. every student uses English in there day to day life, but not every program in university needs english curriculum in their course. Does Grade 12 english really help the students in their program, and help further them in the future? Grade 12 is a very stressful and transitioning year for all students. English is currently a mandatory class that can add even more stress to students. My personal opinion is that Grade 12 university english should be mandatory, but they should change the curriculum.
In the course ENG4U their are a lot of units in the curriculum that should not necessarily be mandatory such as Shakespeare, and poetry. Although these can be very important things to learn, For students that are majoring in english and want to look more into that in the future, I personally feel that they should create a different course to get into deeper historical writing pieces such as Shakespeare. What students learn in grade 12 university english is important, but as the year is stressful, it may be easier on the students to change units and add units that may benefit them in a different way. I think that they should create another course that will keep the students who major in English, that are looking to keep pursuing English in the future to learn about different topics, go deeper into topics that a lot of other student may not need. As keeping more basic everyday english in a different mandatory class. As I do believe that english university should be mandatory, I think they should change the curriculum focusing more on their writing skills, such as learning more about contacting people in a professional way with emails, as students will be using skills like that for their whole life, even in classes that do not need english as much, such as programs in science, and maths. another great topic to study in english is; writing, essay's, book reports, and any form of writing that people see everyday like articles, and blogs just like this one. While I was writing this blog, and thinking more about the topic, It honestly gave me a further look into grade 12 english and how many people truly do use it on a day to day basis. although I believe that they should change up the curriculum, I still think that English is a great course that people should study. |
